Tips To Increase Your Metabolism

We experience so many amazing things as we grow old – we understand ourselves better, we no longer make issues out of small things, so on and so forth. However, as our wisdom and knowledge increases, so is our waistline. Suddenly, there are extra kilos on our belly which are hard to shake off.

The fact is, there is a slowdown in our metabolism as we age. And sometimes, regardless of our efforts, we’re unable to reduce. So many reasons are responsible for this, ranging from hormonal imbalance, increased stress to decreasing muscle strength. Though there are some pretty easy and simple solutions too.

Below given are some tips to increase your metabolism.

1. Add some spice to your food

Giving a spicy kick to your food on an everyday basis can increase your metabolism (it even makes your food tasty). Try chili peppers, red pepper flakes or hot peppers to your food for a variety in taste.

2. Increase your plant protein intake

Protein has a more thermic effect compared to fats or carbs. That’s why protein burns more calories. Plant based protein decreases the risks associated with animal based protein like cancer or heart disease. Add a serving of pulses, lentils, beans in your snacks and meals.

3. Drink plenty of water

Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. According to a study conducted on overweight children, children who drank recommended quantities of water increased their metabolism by 25%. On the contrary, according to studies, poor hydration is related to high weight.

4. Take rest

Enjoying a peaceful sleep of 7-8 hours every night keeps your metabolism strong. When you’re sleep deficient i.e. you take less than 7 hours of sleep every day, your body starts producing more cortisol, a stress hormone. Increased cortisol creates an imbalance in your hormones which in turn can slow down your metabolism. Additionally, lack of sleep increases your cravings for carbohydrate-rich food such as snacks and sweets. This makes sleep deprivation a double edge sword.

5. Build muscles

30 minutes of weight bearing exercises 3 to 4 times in a week, can help you maintain and increase muscle mass. This keeps your metabolism high. A pound of muscle burns almost 6 calories in a day on the other hand; fat burns only 2 calories in a day. In simple words, more muscle means faster metabolism.

6. Drink green tea

According to studies, drinking 2 to 3 cups of green tea in a day significantly increases your metabolism for 24 hours after its consumption. Green tea may as well boost fat oxidation. This means less accumulation of fat.

7. Reduce stress

A healthy metabolism is connected to stress level. Lose your weight and keep it away from you by practicing stress reducing techniques like exercise, meditation etc. Make reduction of stress a part of your overall weight loss plan.
